Keeping Faith When Reasons Are Hard to Find

Life can be difficult. We all face challenges, setbacks, grief, sorrow, and times when we cannot make sense of things or see any good reason to keep believing, dreaming, or moving forward. But it is in those dark times that faith becomes most important.

Faith is not about having all the answers or seeing the whole picture. It is about trusting that there are answers and insights that we may not have access to now but that may be revealed with time or changing perspective. Faith means believing there is meaning, purpose, and hope, even when our limited human logic and reasoning cannot grasp it.

I have learned that reasons and explanations often come later, with distance and processing. When you are in the thick of hardship, you cannot rationalize it or put the pieces together. But later, looking back, you start to understand why things happened the way they did. Reasons emerge that you never could have predicted at the moment. But faith asks us to move ahead even when the way is cloudy, trusting that the sun will break through again.

There are things in this life that we will never fully comprehend. Tragedies and accidents that seem senseless. The death of loved ones too soon. Illness, violence, natural disasters. Our minds struggle, and our emotions rebel. But even if the reasons remain a mysteryโ€”or never satisfyingly explain the painโ€”we can still choose to take one more breath, open to the possibility of hope. We can lean on faith that somehow, in ways we cannot yet see, goodness and growth will emerge.

We often learn and grow more from our most heart-wrenching adversities than from lifeโ€™s smooth seasons. Our most hard-won breakthroughs come on the other side of our most significant unknowns when we latch onto faith, summon courage we didnโ€™t know we had, and discover truth and gifts that only those wilderness places could unveil. Reason plays catch up later. But in the deep darkness, faith goes first, and light always follows.

None of this denies the genuine agony of loss and shattered dreams. Faith does not numb those wounds; it allows the cleansing tears to flow while gently reminding you that there are still stars in the sky, even with rain in your eyes. However horrible this moment, love still lives here. No matter how loud anger screams, peace waits quietly beneath it, waiting for angerโ€™s shouting to tire itself out so peace can speak. However dead and buried hope feels, hope stands calmly behind that tombstone, fully expecting resurrection. Faith holds all these things in tensionโ€”honoring the darkness, lamenting the pain while insistently pointing our gaze back to the light ahead.

I donโ€™t know who you are or what storms you are facing. But I know thisโ€”you still have options. As long as there is breath and presence of mind, possibilities exist. As long as your eyes open each morning, gifts remain to uncover and purpose to embrace. It likely looks very different than you first dreamed, and arriving at this point was undoubtedly traumatic. But the story isnโ€™t over. However forsaken you feel, you are seen and carried. However daunting the road ahead, you donโ€™t walk it alone. And however feeble your grip handles on hope or faith, take heart…

Even the tiniest seed of faith can move mountains when planted in the soil of love. Godโ€™s love, most of all, holds hopeโ€™s tender roots safe through winterโ€™s harshest storms. So be gentle with yourself in these seasons when reasons fail, but hardship remains. Keep taking one step, then the next. Ask for help when you need it. Open your handsโ€”empty, broken, and uncertainโ€”to receive what daybreak might unfold. You may be startled by the beauty still waiting to emerge. For now, let mystery make space for meaning to take root. And always remember, deeper and more accurate than any bleak absence of reason is Loveโ€™s constant presence… holding you, crying and rejoicing with you, illuminating your way step by step through the holy darkness until at last you seeโ€”

Faithโ€™s fragile seed indeed grows mighty. Love never fails. And your closing eyes will open to behold Dawnโ€™s brightest sunrise, where no more journeys end, but only joy awaits beyond each new horizon.
