Why an “Always-On” Schedule Does More Harm than Good: The Case for Mandatory Breaks

The Importance of Taking Breaks for Your Health, Productivity, and Well-Being: Regular breaks throughout your day are crucial for maintaining optimal health, performance, and well-being. However, in our hustle-focused and distraction-filled modern world, it’s easy to push through the day without coming up for air. Prioritizing brief respites to reboot is essential to counter the adverse effects of constant busyness.

In this article, we’ll explore the science-backed reasons why taking short breaks should be a top priority and provide actionable tips on how to build vital breaks into your routine.

Take a break for You!

How Fatigue Impacts Your Body and Brain When you work for prolonged periods without short breaks, your body and mind pay the price. Mental fatigue sets in, which makes tasks seem more complex, and your willpower and decision-making capabilities decline. Physical tiredness and other issues like eyestrain, headaches, and increased stress also creep in.

Research shows that fatigue decreases productivity and performance by up to 30% while increasing distraction and the inability to focus. Pushing through inevitably leads to burnout, so scheduling regular recharging breaks is vital.

The Benefits of Taking Short Breaks Brief breaks offer remarkable benefits instantly and over the long run. Even a 1-5 minute break every hour can provide these advantages:

  • Restores mental clarity and alertness
  • Boosts motivation and counters decision fatigue
  • Allows processing and consolidation of information
  • Promotes creativity through incubation
  • Reduces stress and returns body to homeostasis
  • Prevents physical issues like eyestrain and repetitive motion injuries
  • Enhances overall health, mood, and work performance

How to Prioritize Breaks in Your Routine Ideally, you should take a break about every 90 minutes, aligning with your body’s ultradian rhythms. But any brief respite is beneficial. Here’s how to build rebooting breaks into your day:

Schedule break blocks on your calendar, just like other appointments. This makes them non-negotiable.

Set reminders to take micro-breaks every 30-60 minutes. Even 1-2 minutes of deep breathing provides renewal.

Take breaks outdoors or light exercise like walking or stretching for added benefits.

Do an engaging hobby during longer 15-30 minute breaks to give your DMN brain network a chance to activate.

Unplug from technology in favor of activities like meditating or snacking mindfully. This allows genuine rejuvenation.

The next time you’re tempted to skip breaks to be more productive, remember all the scientific reasons why rest and rebooting should take priority. Avoiding fatigue leads to better health, creativity, and efficiency over the long haul.

Keeping Faith When Reasons Are Hard to Find

Life can be difficult. We all face challenges, setbacks, grief, sorrow, and times when we cannot make sense of things or see any good reason to keep believing, dreaming, or moving forward. But it is in those dark times that faith becomes most important.

Faith is not about having all the answers or seeing the whole picture. It is about trusting that there are answers and insights that we may not have access to now but that may be revealed with time or changing perspective. Faith means believing there is meaning, purpose, and hope, even when our limited human logic and reasoning cannot grasp it.

I have learned that reasons and explanations often come later, with distance and processing. When you are in the thick of hardship, you cannot rationalize it or put the pieces together. But later, looking back, you start to understand why things happened the way they did. Reasons emerge that you never could have predicted at the moment. But faith asks us to move ahead even when the way is cloudy, trusting that the sun will break through again.

There are things in this life that we will never fully comprehend. Tragedies and accidents that seem senseless. The death of loved ones too soon. Illness, violence, natural disasters. Our minds struggle, and our emotions rebel. But even if the reasons remain a mystery—or never satisfyingly explain the pain—we can still choose to take one more breath, open to the possibility of hope. We can lean on faith that somehow, in ways we cannot yet see, goodness and growth will emerge.

We often learn and grow more from our most heart-wrenching adversities than from life’s smooth seasons. Our most hard-won breakthroughs come on the other side of our most significant unknowns when we latch onto faith, summon courage we didn’t know we had, and discover truth and gifts that only those wilderness places could unveil. Reason plays catch up later. But in the deep darkness, faith goes first, and light always follows.

None of this denies the genuine agony of loss and shattered dreams. Faith does not numb those wounds; it allows the cleansing tears to flow while gently reminding you that there are still stars in the sky, even with rain in your eyes. However horrible this moment, love still lives here. No matter how loud anger screams, peace waits quietly beneath it, waiting for anger’s shouting to tire itself out so peace can speak. However dead and buried hope feels, hope stands calmly behind that tombstone, fully expecting resurrection. Faith holds all these things in tension—honoring the darkness, lamenting the pain while insistently pointing our gaze back to the light ahead.

I don’t know who you are or what storms you are facing. But I know this—you still have options. As long as there is breath and presence of mind, possibilities exist. As long as your eyes open each morning, gifts remain to uncover and purpose to embrace. It likely looks very different than you first dreamed, and arriving at this point was undoubtedly traumatic. But the story isn’t over. However forsaken you feel, you are seen and carried. However daunting the road ahead, you don’t walk it alone. And however feeble your grip handles on hope or faith, take heart…

Even the tiniest seed of faith can move mountains when planted in the soil of love. God’s love, most of all, holds hope’s tender roots safe through winter’s harshest storms. So be gentle with yourself in these seasons when reasons fail, but hardship remains. Keep taking one step, then the next. Ask for help when you need it. Open your hands—empty, broken, and uncertain—to receive what daybreak might unfold. You may be startled by the beauty still waiting to emerge. For now, let mystery make space for meaning to take root. And always remember, deeper and more accurate than any bleak absence of reason is Love’s constant presence… holding you, crying and rejoicing with you, illuminating your way step by step through the holy darkness until at last you see—

Faith’s fragile seed indeed grows mighty. Love never fails. And your closing eyes will open to behold Dawn’s brightest sunrise, where no more journeys end, but only joy awaits beyond each new horizon.

Keep the Faith

Finding Peace in a Chaotic Mind

Life often feels chaotic and stressful. Our minds race with thoughts, worries, and to-do lists. Finding mental peace amidst the chaos can seem impossible. However, you can cultivate more tranquility and presence with some intentional practices.

Start by observing your thoughts without judgment. Notice when your mind starts spinning anxiously about the future or ruminating on the past. See these thoughts for what they are – not necessarily reality. Breathe deeply and bring your focus back to the present moment.

Limit consuming media, news, and social media that overstimulate your mind. Spend time mindfully in nature and simple activities like walking, stretching, making art, or sipping tea. Let your senses fully engage – notice sights, sounds, and smells surrounding you.

Establish a regular meditation practice, even if just 5 or 10 minutes daily. Apps like Calm, Headspace, and Insight Timer offer great guided meditations. Over time, meditation strengthens your ability to gain distance from thoughts. The present moment becomes clearer.

Identify patterns causing your inner turmoil—for example, certain friendships, situations, and social media use. Consider what changes might increase peace. Release anything weighing on your spirit—clear clutter in your living space.

Practice mantras that uplift and steady your mind. Think, “I am safe and at peace in this moment. Everything is alright.” Speak encouraging words to yourself throughout the day.

Caring for your body also settles your mind. Move your body daily with exercise you enjoy. Eat foods that nourish you. Get out in nature. Try yoga or tai chi. Get proper sleep.

Regular reflection and intentional practices allow you to find sanctuary within, even amongst outer chaos. Be patient and keep nurturing your inner light. Your mind will begin to settle, worry less, and embrace the beauty of each moment.
